The Deaf Community is a beautiful linguistic and cultural minority. But we also experience domestic and sexual violence at a greater incidence as a minority population.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline partners with ADWAS to provide a Hotline staffed by Deaf advocates who answer calls from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday in American Sign Language. Through empowerment philosophy, Deaf advocates truly understand who they are helping, and can easily communicate information and promote access to resources with culturally sensitive training.
But calls for help do occur after 5pm and on weekends. And the Deaf advocates are not there to help due to lack of funding.
A hotline can be a critical lifeline to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. But what if one couldn’t speak the language of the person at the other end? In the Deaf/hard of hearing community, access to information and resources related to domestic violence and sexual assault is often limited and especially impersonal when communicating through a sign language interpreter.
We need fully trained and accessible Deaf advocates more than ever to answer late night and weekend calls for help.
Who do we want to answer the call? Support us now in expanding our hotline program so we can have Deaf advocates can answer those calls for help around the clock, 24/7.

Our goal is to raise $250,000 towards funding a 24/7 National Deaf Hotline Center that is fully staffed by Deaf advocates ready to communicate in American Sign Language with Deaf and Hard of Hearing survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence.
